Mary Vasaly Takes Office as the 90th President of the Hennepin County Bar AssociationEffective July 1, 2008, Mary Vasaly became the 90th President of the 8000-member Hennepin County Bar Association. In an interview with The Hennepin Lawyer, Mary observed that at the end of our careers, "most of us will not be satisfied reflecting on the amount of money we made or the number of cases we won. Rather, we will want to remember contributions we made to the community, to professionalism, to improvement of the rule of law, and access to legal services." Mary has served as president-elect (2007-2008), treasurer (2006-2007) and secretary (2005-2006) for the HCBA. She received the 2006 President's Award from the Minnesota State Bar Association and was named "Attorney of the Year" by Minnesota Lawyer in 2003. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, an honor limited to no more than the top one-third of one percent of attorneys in each state. Mary, a partner at Maslon, has been a lawyer for 25 years and practices in the areas of appeals, probate/trust litigation and commercial litigation. She tries cases and argues appeals in the state and federal courts of Minnesota as well as other states. Mary has also appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court. She edited the Eighth Circuit Appellate Practice Manual, now in its third edition, among other books and articles and has taught appellate practice at the University of St. Thomas Law School and the University of Minnesota Law School. Mary has served as the Chair of the ABA TIPS Appellate Advocacy Committee and of the Council of Appellate Lawyers. Mary is a 1983 cum laude graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School. |
